Windows 7 is reaching its end of life phase, early next year, 14th January 2020, to be precise. Microsoft will stop pushing out updates for Windows 7 after this date.
Before you spiral into a frenzy of technical anxiety, don’t worry, Microsoft isn’t shutting down Windows 7 completely and it won’t stop working when January rolls around. You’ll still be able to use Windows 7 for as long as it suits you, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you should keep using it…
If You Can Still Use It, Why Change?
The main concern with sticking with Windows 7 once it enters the end of life stage is that the security updates and support will cease, meaning the operating system won’t be patched. This can leave your PC vulnerable and open to threats / viruses.
While Windows 7 will still be usable, we recommend that you plan to upgrade to Windows 10, or an alternative system before end of life hits. Upgrading to Windows 10 should be a relatively simple process.
The layout and design of Windows 10 is very similar to 7 so you shouldn’t feel out of place. Most of your apps and programs will update to work on the new operating system too. You can check out the main differences between Windows 7 and 10 here.
Do You Need a New Computer?
There is a key point you have to think about though, how old is your PC?
Computers nowadays don’t usually come installed or sold with older operating systems such as Windows 7, meaning you’ve either had this particular PC for a few years now or you are running Windows 7 for a specific reason, possibly to run specialised applications.
If you bought your PC when Windows 7 was the current thing, it’s probably nearing the end of its life also. Purchasing a newer computer with Windows 10 or an alternative operating system pre-installed is most likely the more cost effective option, as you’ll need to replace or upgrade your current PC sooner rather than later.
